The September 2010 Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine has been posted on the Smithsonian website and is available to read online here.

if you’re not familiar with this magazine it  is a high-quality publication, really one of the best aviation related magazines in print today. The articles are entertaining, informative and accurate.

Articles this month include a veteran reporter describing his search for the aircraft of area 51/Groom Lake. Undergoing a major expansion since 2005, Groom Lakes uncompromising secrecy can breed abuses of power. Even in the early 1990s it was estimated that the cost for Groom Lake was almost $100 million a day.

Employees of the base are prohibited from discussing any details concerning their work however some have offered glimpses of what it is like to work at the base to the veteran reporter. Most of the workers live in the Las Vegas area and fly to Groom Lake on Boeing 737s painted white with the nose to tail red stripe. Typically many of the workers fly to the base on a Monday and back to Las Vegas and home on a Thursday or Friday although daily round trips are common.

In space exploration the article lost in space details microgravity’s mysterious side effects and things disappearing.

In how things work a team setting out to solve old disappearances an article titled cold case  looks for long-lost aircraft.

In military aviation the Douglas C-133 had a bad habit, it it kept crashing. Originally designed to transport the first US ICBMs the aircraft is discussed in an article is titled “the curse of the cargo master”.

The cross-model commonality and operational improvements that Boeing designed into the 747 — 800 while incorporating technology from the 787. The aircraft includes a new flight management computer system, electronic checklists, airport moving map, and environmental control system. The redesign weighing includes advanced technology airfoils, fly by wire spoilers and outboard ailerons.

Operating the 747 — 800 existing airports taking advantage of the fact that most of today’s major airports are designed largely based on the critical dimensions of the 747 — 400. Since the 747 — 800 retains many of the 747 — 400 key dimensions most runways and taxiway widths should be compatible with the new 747 — 800.

Boeing has introduced a new fleet reliability tool to enable airlines to find improvements and gain efficiency.

Airline operators often contact Boeing requesting information on whether commercial tools and equipment from different vendors or with different part numbers are equivalent to those that are listed in the Boeing aircraft maintenance manuals. The article discusses Boeing’s position and the regulatory requirements and determining the equivalency of commercial tools and equipment.

As usual this month’s articles include several first-hand experiences related to improper procedures and not following instructions. One incident in particular occurred during the servicing of the main landing gear on a stinger 500 aircraft. In an eagerness to get the job done an error was made assembling the landing gear causing the shrink rod behind the strut body to snap in half and wedge between the retract actuator and the strut. Mistakes happen and part of the learning process in the Navy is acknowledging the mistakes and learning from them in addition to sharing information so that others may avoid making the same error.

Another incident illustrating the potential hazard in not following procedures when working with tools is a sailor that had part of his thumb cut off while using a disc sander.

An $800,000 mistake could have been avoided by proper procedures and preparedness when an engine was operated with preservative oil instead of operating oil (MIL-L-23699)

There’s a list of the class “C” mishaps involving aircraft in the Navy from January 2 to June 1, 2010:

Included are FA-18′s where the door fasteners were improperly installed resulting in FOD. A follow me truck collision with an aircraft parked on the transient line and a stabilizer that was damaged after an aircraft was repositioned.
