F-100 Super Sabre at War
Few aircraft have made their appearance under as auspicious circumstances as the North American F-100 Super Sabre. Designed by the same team responsible for the legendary P-51 Mustang and the superb F-86 Sabre, the F-100
was the world’s first production fighter capable of flying at supersonic speeds in level flight. In service, however, the F-100 never lived up to the standards set by its illustrious predecessors. Early examples proved exceedingly hazardous to fly. By the time the aircraft’s problems were solved, later and better fighters had entered service.
The F-100 eventually settled into the role of a fighter-bomber, in which it provided solid service
in the Cold War as well as the Vietnam War and into the 1980s.
